This is the Smith Civil War Memorial in Philadelphia's Fairmont park.Fairmont is the park that just keeps on giving. (things to photograph)
The Memorial was erected between 1897 and 1912 under a bequest of Richard Smith. Among the military and naval men immortalized here are Generals Hancock, McClellan, Meade, Reynolds, and Admirals Porter and Dahlgren.
It looks like the heroes of the South are on the left and the heroes of the North are on the right.
I was surprised by the size of this monument, it's really tall and very impressive.

They ARE impressive. I'm amazed at how many Civil War monuments there are in the US. During the War Between the States, my part of Canada was just being settled.

ReplyDeleteThis might sound odd, but I have often wondered what this country would be like today if the South has won the Civil War? I can guess it would be different. And I am not so sure but think our government would be improved somewhat at least.
