I don't know anything about this building but it seems like it could be a night club.
I can imagine this place 50 years ago filled with well dressed people smoking and drinking while listening to jazz that was smoother than honey and cooler than the ice in their drinks.
That's probably far from the real story but it's fun to imagine.

This is a great photo for monochrome. The letters are spectacular. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteI love the style of the letters. Even the trash can is perfect for monochrome. The history could be quite interesting and add even more to the monochrome style! Your trip was definitely worth it...
ReplyDeleteYou don't see many facades like this one anymore. They were rather elegant. Nice shot!
ReplyDeleteI think that surely your story is right.
ReplyDeleteA witty building is photographed with an atmosphere settled down.
This building is photographed beautifully in this way, and I imagine it to be happy.
"....listening to jazz that was smoother than honey and cooler than the ice in their drinks."
ReplyDeleteNow isn't that a memory. If only the tables could tell tales. Great picture James.
That's a good imagination! The black and white image makes it look rather deserted.
ReplyDeleteA very interesting assortment of textures, I love how it is framed with the trees. The letters do give the feel of another era.
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful building and so well preserved. Definitely takes you back to a different place and time! Great shot!
ReplyDeleteClosed during the day and opened at night!
ReplyDeleteYour story brings this so to life. I can just picture that as well. I love it :) When I saw the title in my google reader I thought what the hell is he doing with Maxine (that cartoon character lady) LOL
ReplyDeleteTHat sure brings back memories. Those letters look like longer ago. More Charleston time??
ReplyDeleteJazz and blues sound great too.
Very cool picture, love your imagination and you weren't far off.
ReplyDelete"From a casual lunch to a formal private dinner, Maxine's offers a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere and cuisines bursting with flavor. It offers the finest catering and event hosting and showcases world class R and B and Jazz artists."
Like you, the design of letters and the mood of the picture made me think about the fifties..
ReplyDeleteHumm, listening to "smooth and cool" Jazz, in the darkness of a night-club, with candles on the tables..(sigh..)
Gosh, take away the parking meter and newspaper dispenser and it would almost look like a Parisian scene...or am I thinking of Maxim's?? :<)
ReplyDeleteA name like Maxine's is certainly evocative.
ReplyDeleteI liked your imagination, in fact I did know nothing about this name or place, but I could imagine the story following your words!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Léia
Love the photo, the Deco lettering - and your story! Photos should inspire the imagination, I think, and b&w does it so well.
ReplyDeleteThree Rivers Daily Photo
I love that lettering style! This looks fabulous in black and white.
ReplyDeleteThis has such a beautiful retro look to it the black and white makes it look right out of a news paper clip!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I see your imagination took you to the same place mine did. I can hear jazz in the jukebox.
ReplyDeleteI too agree with your sentiments! I could imagine being there, enjoying a show, sipping a drink...
ReplyDeleteI love the old timey look of it. Being in black and white really makes it look like the picture came out of someone's trunk in an attic. Is it still open for business?
ReplyDeleteDF
Great photo. And I just love the lettering.
ReplyDeleteI also look at the photo and let
ReplyDeletethe imagination fly, seeking details
and then just enjoy!
Beautiful monochrome! Thanks!
I used to see this place from my office window. I remember when it opened, and when it closed. Just couldn't get the customers to come at night. Has it re-opened? I love your photograph. It captures what the original owners had intended. Lizzy :)
ReplyDeleteA great photo for monochrome. I can imagine the jazz and the peole, who was ther in the good old days.
