Last week I was fortunate enough to capture some bees in flight. This weekend I was walking in a large park in outskirts of Philadelphia when I saw these beautiful butterflies next to a creek. The bottom one's shadow reminds me of Batman and the top one looks like she has a parasol. Besides the yellow and black they also have some red and blue near their tail end.
Anyone know what type of butterfly they are?
Whatever they are they are gorgeous. Hope you had a good time at the movies today. :)
ReplyDeleteThese are great pictures James.
ReplyDeleteI'm no expert but I think they're Tiger Swallowtail Butterflys.
I love the shadows!

I like the shadows. ;) I think you would enjoy a visit to Grounds for Sculpture (where my Depression Bread Line photo came from). It's located off 95/295 in Hamilton Township, where i grew up. Here's their website:

Very nice, James. This is good news! My wife should be able to start on our 2010 crop of butterflies. We're hoping to raise Monarch's this year, but we've had difficulty growing milkweed to feed them. The best part (for me) is that after the emerge from their chrysalis, their wings are wet and then need an hour or so to dry. This gives me plenty of time to photograph them :-) Shhh, don' tell anyone. http://2zars.blogspot.com/2009/08/how-to-grow-butterfly.html
ReplyDeleteGreat shots. The butterflies are lovely.
ReplyDeleteWow. They are hard to capture. And the shadows underneath them really set them off. Excellent work!

If it is yellow it is definitely a male Tiger Swallowtail. The female is smaller and almost black with the same stripes even darker.
