Les Papillons Jaune

Last week I was fortunate enough to capture some bees in flight. This weekend I was walking in a large park in outskirts of Philadelphia when I saw these beautiful butterflies next to a creek. The bottom one's shadow reminds me of Batman and the top one looks like she has a parasol. Besides the yellow and black they also have some red and blue near their tail end.
Anyone know what type of butterfly they are?

  2. These are great pictures James.
I'm no expert but I think they're Tiger Swallowtail Butterflys.
    I love the shadows!

  6. Not a clue what they are, but you're the second 'butterfly' I've seen today, so I will have to post mine (taken the other day before our deluge)!

These butterflies are familiar to me, from my Pa. days.

  9. Very nice, James. This is good news! My wife should be able to start on our 2010 crop of butterflies. We're hoping to raise Monarch's this year, but we've had difficulty growing milkweed to feed them. The best part (for me) is that after the emerge from their chrysalis, their wings are wet and then need an hour or so to dry. This gives me plenty of time to photograph them :-) Shhh, don' tell anyone. http://2zars.blogspot.com/2009/08/how-to-grow-butterfly.html

  14. What a wonderful shot. It is a *male* Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. I have some shots of these myself. I love to take photos of butterflies and go to butterfly gardens whenever I get a chance. Really nice!

  20. If it is yellow it is definitely a male Tiger Swallowtail. The female is smaller and almost black with the same stripes even darker.
