A Philadelphia Stranger in the Night

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-
I posted this photo in black and white at my other blog and promised to show the color version here.
This is an alley in Old City area of Philadelphia. I saw the guy walking and I ran over set up my tripod, clicked the shutter and hoped for the best. I'm happy with the photo but I can't decide if I like this version or the black and white one better. He's kind of spooky like a walking shadow don't you think? :)

When I walk around a city taking night photos I keep my camera on the tripod and I usually wear the camera and tripod strapped around my neck. I bet I'd make a pretty funny street photo for somebody. It's like a giant necklace that would put Mr. T to shame. :)

You can see it in black and white version here.

  1. I must say I prefer the B&W version. And you have a long way to go before being more ridiculous than M. T! :))

  3. Monochrome gets my vote, it's awesome!

    P.S.
I'll be posting two shots of 'the tree' Wednesday :-)

  4. It's hard to decide on a fave, they each have sure a different, but dramatic feel. I think you should do a reflection-self portrait, in your camera/tripod necklace!

  5. Sous le charme de cette photo, on la croirait sorti d'un roman policier des années 1800.... bizarrement (moi qui adore le b&w) je préfère la version couleur, je trouve que b&w devrait être plus hard

  6. I really liked the B&W version, but the ambient light gives this one an amazing goldish glow. They are both excellent James!

  7. Happy gruesome New Year, lol! I like the b&w best but for some reason I'm imagining a stalker, hence the gruesome. Merely a joke of course, have a great 2011!

  8. That's a great shot! I like the B&W too. What type of tripod do you use? You need a self portrait!

  10. I love it! It does seem just a little spooky as he is the only one out at the moment.

  11. I like them both! in the black and white photo his head looks extremely small.

  12. Feels as if there's just enough space left to live between the walls.

A unique moment indeed. May you all have a good Tuesday.

  13. B&w does it for me, but I always prefer b&w so I don't know how much my vote is worth! Either way, this is a great photo.

  14. I think the b&w has more atmosphere, the color makes it a little more "normal" if that makes sense, I like the other-worldly feeling of the b&w with this one. Still can't believe you took a picture of the same guy I photographed a while back... I'm sure it's him... (see comment at Something Sighted if not seen yet...)

  15. I really like both, but the color is a little spookier, I think. I'd like to know when you are out at night because I'd sure like to get that shot with that "classy" necklace! =) I'd have it on blogger in NO time!

  17. Well, James, I think that the black/white one is more "framable" but love these rich colors too... glad to hear about the necklace as I find it a challenge to have the tripod ready for action and to tote it from one spot to another, particularly in Paris

  19. Both are equally beautiful and spooky. I can almost hear "Tubular Bells" playing in the background...

  20. The back figure seems to melt to somewhere of the future.

    Time goes straight on.
    As for the man, too.
    By positive step.

    Thank you.
