Vicki and I also went to the Mercer Museum in Doylestown. It has six floors of all sorts of things. "The core of the Mercer Museum collection was conceived by its founder as an encyclopedic assemblage of pre-industrial American material culture. Established in 1897, it is now recognized as one of the most extensive collections of artifacts associated with pre-1850 American life-ways and technological history. Comprising nearly 40,000 objects, the museum is especially renowned for its collections of tools and artifacts associated with pre-industrial trades, crafts, agriculture and domestic work. While originating primarily in the Middle Atlantic region, these collections also include thousands of objects from New England, Appalachia and the Deep South."I think it's a very unusual place inside and out.

it sounds like the sort of museum i would love to browse about in for an hour of so. especially since it contains a large collection of objects from new england, the deep south and appalachia.

It sounds a bit like the origins of the Smithsonian institute. And it would be worth seeing for the building alone - it looks like a castle.

ReplyDeleteThe Mercer Museum is fabulous, although I have not been there for quite some time.. it is one of those places I want to visit again once we are back in PA. 48 hours from now, we will be on the road (hopefully with 9 hours or so of driving out of the way toward PA!) We will be living only about 15 miles from Doylestown. I am so looking forward to new photo ops, of the old familiar places, my photography has changed a great deal since I last lived in the area!
