This is a statue of Union Civil War General George McClellan on his horse. It stands next to Philadelphia's City Hall. This statue was created in 1894 by Henry Jackson Ellicott.
I recently started taking night pictures and it's become addicting. I think I'd start a night photo meme if I didn't already have Weekend Reflections. Philadelphia is only 20 miles away so I hopped on the train and spent a few hours taking pictures earlier this evening. It's very interesting city with lots of history. I think I'll be spending a lot more time there.
I love all the lights in the buildings and the General looks like he may gallop away at any minute.
ReplyDeleteWonderful picture :)

très belle cette statue, et j’aime l’arrière plan
ReplyDeleteA dramatic and dignified photo.
ReplyDeleteAs you go along, please share what you learn about night photography. So difficult, to say the least.
A great photograph of the statue.

City lights during the blue hour are the BEST! This is really a great shot!
ReplyDeleteSuchna great photo. Hmm a night photo meme. Boy I'd enjoy that and maybe learn how to take night shots :)
ReplyDeleteSo interesting with the background!
ReplyDeleteVery nice with the sun reflecting from that window.
ReplyDeleteThis picture is really beautiful James, congratulations!

I see that you must have used a small aperture to get that nice "star-like" effect. Very fitting!
ReplyDeletePerfect! Great shot at the right time. Love James, what a beautiful image.
ReplyDeleteHe seems to be lost among the tall buildings, and asking to himself: "where shall I go now?"...
ReplyDeleteBeautyful picture, by lights and contrasts.
What a great shot and you timed it just right. This is the quintessential blend of old and new, that Philly is famous for.
ReplyDeletethe buildings are such a contrast to the statue of the general. Love the reflection of the setting sun. nicely done.
ReplyDeleteLove this photo, especially the sun reflections off the statue. (You know you can have more than one meme. Just don't go crazy and have 15!) Another idea, is to start a photo group, with limited membership, like Dot does: http://theworldinblackwhite.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteIt´s wonderful!
ReplyDeleteLike it, I also like the effect of night scenes, I like all the lights and reflections:)
ReplyDeleteExcellent photograph! Kinda makes me want to go meander the streets with my camera.
ReplyDeleteOooh, great photo with so many elements - lines, shapes, sunlight, light, and this old figure among modern architecture.
ReplyDeleteYou got a good camera to take night photos? What I like is one I can take the skyline of Auckland.
ReplyDeleteFantastic one!
ReplyDeleteA blessed New Year James.
Hey James, seems like I've seen this gentleman before, in some hikes around city hall... must be awful to be a general with no war to wage... Guess he didn't notice the no parking signs though.
ReplyDeleteAll buildings have characteristics.
ReplyDeleteThe American design is very elegant.
They in itself emits brightness.
Yes. His figure is proudhearted.
It is important almost as same as life.
Confession: I am jealous of your night photography skills. So if you don't start a meme...how about some tips and tutorials?
ReplyDeleteLove the photo - he seems so out of place!
Great capture.
ReplyDeleteGreat capture. I told Tara when we went to NJ for the concert the other week that I wanted to go downtown and spend an evening taking night shots. We should have a night time photo walk... I'm a little hesitant to go alone! That and if it would warm up just a bit!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Historic Philadelphia was our families favorite vacation destination. Fabulous and I would love to see more of your pictures from there. This one is powerful - love the perspective!
ReplyDeleteVery striking image. Love that sunlight bouncing off the high-rise windows.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little late, but wishing you a very blessed new year!
Outstanding! I'm in awe, James.
ReplyDeleteGrande questa statua !!!
ReplyDeleteBuona serata e buon anno 2011 :)

What a great photograph! I have seen that statue and I have to say it looks better through your lens and eye. I also have a Canon T1i and just love it. Did you use a tripod for this shot? Love the starbursts.
ReplyDeleteJ'aime beaucoup la composition de cette photo, la discordance des temps et des plans.
ReplyDeleteBravo
I like night photography too. So many times I didn't expect how great it turn out. Great lovely shot on this one. Happy Friday!
ReplyDeleteI like this oone a lot! The time between afternoon and night basks the subject in wonderful light. And you got a reflection too!
