An Old Amish Farm

I used to see orange orchards when I was a kid in California but I don't recall seeing many farms like this one. I think I read that there are thousands of farms in Pennsylvania. If I took a photo in this spot a hundred plus years ago it might have looked the same.

Roadside Americana

This is the outside of Jennie's Diner. It's an original 50's diner and they serve all kinds of food 24hrs a day including pancakes that are bigger than hubcaps. It's a very popular stop for truckers. Next week I'll give you a peak inside.

Blogger Problems Today

At first I couldn't see some photos on certain blogs, now I can't see 90% of blog photos including my own. I hope this doesn't last long but I've already wasted lots of time trying to figure out this problem. If anyone knows why this could be happening or how to fix it please let me know. I'm sorry that I was only able to see a few blog posts today.

An Amish Muscle Car

I couldn't tell if this boy was working or having fun. Maybe both. Vicki and I went to Amish Country for the first time last Saturday and I fell in love with the area. So I went back today and did several "drive by shootings" like this one.

Since the sky is so beautifully blue and one one the clouds reminds me of a heavenly arrow pointing the way for the boy and his dog, I've decided to submit this to Skywatch Friday. Just click the link and see amazing skies from all over the world.

Bucks County From the Side of the Road

I took these last week on one of my scenic drives. I used to complain about all of the beautiful scenery but no place to park and take pictures. Then I realized that a lot of the time I'm the only person around so I have plenty of time to snap a few through the car window.

Another New Hope Guardian

This creepy 300 pound metal sculpture wields a large spiked mace while continually crouching in front of one of New Hope's many art galleries. Who needs a watch dog when you can have this guy guarding the place. I just wonder how many customers it's scared away. I don't know what his name is but I guess some people call him art.

Be careful not to stare into his eyes for very long. :)

The Satterthwaite farmstead

I've been exploring Bucks County now that the weather is warmer.

This is three views of the 18Th century Satterwaite farmhouse that I found about five miles from home. The bottom photo includes the the rest of the farmstead. I recently found out that the oldest wood framed building in Pennsylvania is a short walk from my apartment. I'll post a picture in the future.

Durham Township Grist Mill

Some historic shots taken from my car in Upper Bucks County and yes I was driving. I might also add that it's a very rural area and I was the only one around.
"The Durham Grist Mill was in operation for 147 years from 1820 to 1967, milling famous Ceresota Flour from 1820 through the 1920’s and then livestock feed until closing." The second oldest post office in the United Sates (circa 1727) is still in this building it can be seen from the front but of course I don't have a photo of it. I take one next time. There is also an old 18Th century iron works furnace near this site that I hope to find.

Singularly Focused

Lately I've been exploring my creative side while trying to improve my photography. There are so many things to learn and I'm still trying to figure out my own photographic style. I think rust and a repetitive pattern is a good combination for an interesting photograph.

On March 12TH 2009 I did my first blog post, so today is my 1st blogiversary! It started at my other blog Something Sighted. I have a special anniversary post at Something Sighted. Newtown Area Photo was started two months later.

The photo above is the watery reflection of a couple walking across a railroad bridge with trees in the background. I rotated it 180 degrees for an enhanced visual effect. I think the reflection looks like an impressionist painting.

The Guardians of New Hope

The top and bottom statues where on a roof near the flower pot from the previous Weekend Reflections post. There were hundreds of other garden statues around the place too. They were amongst all sorts of rusty outdoor antiques. I only had my 50mm lens and I was glad to find so many interesting subjects to photograph.

Well, the rules said to be creative and it could be any face, so here are some stone faces for Sistertex's "Face of the Week" meme. You can see more faces here.

The Statue of Liberty from a Distance

A nice view of the Hudson River (I wonder what I'll see if I use my zoom?)

Wow! That's the Statue of Liberty! This picture was taken from the same spot as the top one(what a difference a zoom makes!)

It was getting late in the day and we were about to head back to the train station when a lady saw me looking at my map and asked if she could be of assistance. She said she's lived in Lower Manhattan for 30 yrs. I told her that we didn't need any directions but before I knew it she was leading us to a river walk type park which was the opposite direction from the train station. We were both exhausted after walking all day but I was glad that we made the final trek to the water because I was surprised with my first ever sighting of the Statue of Liberty.

I can't wait to get a closer look.

Bowery Mission

We spent Saturday in New York. The train ride was just over an hour each way. I'm definitely going to start going there more often.

"The Bowery Mission was established in 1879 by the Rev. and Mrs. A. G. Ruliffson to assist recent immigrants to New York City who had not yet found adequate means to earn a living. After the original superintendent died, the mission experienced serious financial difficulty and was in danger of falling under secular control. Through the efforts of Dr. Louis Klopsch, owner of the Christian Herald magazine, the mission was purchased by the magazine in 1895. Since 1894, the Christian Herald had been publishing regular reports of the suffering among New York City's poor.
Located in the Lower East Side, the Bowery Mission continues to assist the destitute and poor by offering meals, shelter, showers and clothing to desperate people living on the street. Homeless men are challenged to enter a six-to-nine month residential program to experience the beginning of permanent change. Seminars, computer classes, job training and Bible studies help up to 62 men at a time break destructive habits and prepare to rejoin society."

Magic Bokeh Pot (Weekend Reflections #24)

On Thursday I saw a large flower pot filled with water that reflected an antique decorative iron fence. There were antique statues and old iron fencing all over the place. I shot this with an aperture that was wide enough to blur the pot and enhance the reflection. I left some depth of field at the top left to show perspective.

We had another record turn out last week. Thank you to everyone for making this a really fun meme. I enjoy looking for reflections, I think it helps my "photographer's eye".
I also like looking at and getting ideas from other people's reflections.

Chinatown Dragon

At first I could only see his smoke. Then a hand with a cigarette popped out. Then his head. After a short staring match he slowly disappeared behind the the bricks leaving only a lit cigarette, the stench of burning tobacco and an aire of mystery.

Another Cemetery, Another Walk

This was my favorite jogger and I almost missed him because he blended in so well.




This tree is really big. I'm going to come back and take more pictures in Spring and Fall.

What's wrong with this picture?

I took my car to get serviced today. The service place is right across the street from another cemetery. This one had several people walking and jogging around it so I joined the crowd and snapped a few pictures while I waited for my car.

I also saw the snow melting. How long can it be until flowers replace the snow?
