A Noir Lament (Weekend Street/Reflections # 225)

Newport Beach, California

In the smoky haze of the late-night café, Evelyn sat at her usual table, the black-and-white world around her pulsing with the mournful wail of a live jazz band. The saxophone’s notes curled through the air like a confession, each one tugging at the edges of her grief. Behind her dark sunglasses, her eyes were fixed on the empty chair across from her, where her late husband used to tap his foot to the rhythm. A glass of bourbon sat untouched, next to a faded photo of the two of them dancing here years ago. The band played on, but for Evelyn, the music was a ghost—haunting, familiar, and gone.

Mahalo (Weekend Street/Reflections # 200)

Newport Beach, California

Next Thursday is the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. I have many things to be thankful for this year. I hope you do too.

I'll be away for three weekends starting next Friday but Weekend Street/Reflections will still be here. 😊

Mahalo is a Hawaiian word meaning thanks, gratitude, admiration, praise, esteem, regards, and respect.

Hero (Weekend Street/Reflections # 185)

 Newport Beach, California

A man reading about a local lifeguard hero who lost his life in the line of duty. Lifeguard Ben Carlson had over 500 rescues until a fateful day in 2014 when he was killed by a massive wave.

Taking a break (Weekend Street/Reflections # 137)

 Newport Beach, California

One night while walking around the fun zone I "spied" a cook taking a break at the Harborside restaurant in the Balboa Pavillion. I took the shot through a circular feature on a metal fence. It kind of looks like the view from a spyglass, which fits the nautical theme of the area.

Yosemite Sam/Horace Greeley (Weekend Street/Reflections # 95)

Newport Beach, California

While standing on the Newport Beach pier, he said, "Go West, young man" and laughed. I wondered if he wanted me to jump off the end of the pier or go to Catalina Island. Then I laughed because he called me a young man. I was probably 50 when I took this picture.😄
Have a good weekend!

A Slow Night at the Trattoria (Weekend Street/Reflections # 14)

 Newport Beach, California

I took this photo in 2018 however it could have been taken in 2020 or 2021 with more customers.  COVID restrictions haven't been enforced in my city and several restaurants have remained open.

However, I think some restaurants were open only for takeaway for a while.

I've been tracking COVID since February 2020, and thankfully, it has never been a big problem here.

Newport Beach population 86,000:

As of April 29, 2021, there are approximately 134 cases.

From day one less than 5% of the population have been infected (3,868 cases), and of those infected, more than 98% survive. (total deaths 75)

How has it been where you live?

Ciao Ciao (Weekend Reflections # 590)

Newport Beach  (Balboa Island)

Somehow the Italian restaurant across the street made a double reflection in this window. I've never eaten there but it's usually crowded.

Have a great weekend!

Time Marches On, Happy 2021 ! (Weekend Reflections # 588)

Newport Beach, California

My phone camera takes really bad night photos but despite that I sometimes try to take reflections pictures. I was going to delete it but the elements of darkness, light, obscurity and even a clock seem appropriate as we exit 2020 and enter a new year.

Happy New Year!

Oh Christmas Trees ? (Weekend Reflections # 587)

Newport Beach, California

It's been a strange year, so why not a reflection of a strange "Christmas tree." It's actually a tube with colored lights made in the shape of a Christmas tree. I see them a lot, but this one caught my eye because at first I thought there were two, one inside and one outside. Turns out that there was just one, and the inside one was a reflection.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Into the Sunset (Weekend Reflections # 572)

Newport Beach, California

The sun reflected on the water.

When my wife and I walk around Balboa Island it's always nice to be at this spot as the sun is setting. Sometimes we have to pick up the pace to get there in time. It's always very beautiful but I wouldn't mind trading places with the guy in the canoe.

Balboa Island Museum (Weekend Reflections # 557)

Newport Beach, California

A rare local reflection after a rare rain storm.  :-)  Taken January 2020

If I would have lain flat on the ground or if my knees and back were younger, I probably could have captured more of this building reflected in a puddle between parked cars. But I was able to get the top of the building with the signage.

Happy reflecting!

Goodbye 2010's, Hello 2020's (Weekend Reflections # 535)

Newport Beach, California

The weather around here isn't good for sleighs and reindeer so Santa has to be creative. I imagine that he's being pulled by dolphins. ;-) Thankfully, I was good this year and he brought me some colorful reflections.

Happy 2020!

Free Range Cafe (Weekend Reflections # 485)

Newport Beach, California

I captured this reflection last summer as I walked passed The Free Range Cafe on Balboa Island. The bar area was reflected on one of the patio tables.

Happy reflecting!

Happy New Year ! (Weekend Reflections # 483)

Newport Beach, California

A couple of weeks ago my wife and I were finishing a walk along the harbor on Balboa Island when we saw bright lights and heard carnival sounds approaching. That gave me enough time to get a shot of the elaborately decorated yacht as it passed by. It was a sight to see: Ferris wheel spinning, carousel turning, roller coaster rolling with all the sound effects. We saw it again during the annual Christmas Boat Parade.
Note: The dark areas obscuring the reflected lights at the bottom of the photo are rowboats tied to the dock and the shoreline.

A happy and healthy 2019 to all!

Lights on the Water (Weekend Reflections # 478)

Newport Beach, California

I was crossing the harbor on a ferry when this little boat crossed in front of us. The boat was going pretty fast so I was lucky to be able snap a picture in time to capture the colors reflected on the water.

Happy Thanksgiving weekend!
