Between the Moments (Weekend Street/Reflections # 290)

 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Life rushes past in a blur, but every so often, we get the chance to stand still long enough to notice it.

What is your favorite season? I like winter; my mother thinks it's because I was born in February.

 Philadelphia, PA

The ladies caught me, but the guys were oblivious. The look on the little girl's face made me laugh. This photo was probably taken in 2015.

Un écho de la couleur verte (Weekend Street/Reflections # 285)

 Paris, France

I snapped this photo roughly 16 years ago on Rue de Rennes, yet I am still struck by the accidental symphony of green that seems to echo down the street. Once you spot the RATP bus and the boy running with the balloon, you notice the color everywhere: the overhead traffic lights, people's clothing, plants, the hotel and other signs, street bins, the glowing pharmacy crosses in the distance, and even a few minor green reflections.

Green is fine, but my favorite color has always been blue.😎

Through the fog (Weekend Street/Reflections # 284)

 Venice, Italy

Thanks so much for all of your thoughts and prayers. It has been a strange and overwhelming few weeks. Back in May, we thought everything was fine. Just a few weeks later, we were told my wife needed a difficult, life-saving surgery to remove a large tumor in her cervical spine, a procedure that carried a risk of quadriplegia. We also learned she had nodules in one of her lungs.

A few days later, she had the spine surgery and spent a critical night in the ICU. The next morning, we didn't know if she would even be able to walk. Incredibly, less than 24 hours after surgery, she was walking laps around the Brain and Spine Acute Care Unit and was able to come home the following day. While she has lost feeling on her left side, the surgeon says the operation couldn't have gone better, and she may regain sensation over time.

After an anxious week-long wait, the pathology results came back, and thankfully, the tumor was rare but benign! Now, she is scheduled for more scans and a lung biopsy in a few weeks. We are praying these go just as well as her spine recovery.

                                                      Happy 250th Birthday, America!

Walls closing in (Weekend Street/Reflections # 281)

Venice, Italy

I've pre-scheduled a few posts because I'm not sure if I'll feel up to blogging over the next little while. Yesterday, my wife and I received some very unexpected news from a specialist. In short, she needs to undergo what the doctor described as one of the most difficult and dangerous operations on several levels of her cervical spine to remove a tumor of unknown type. The best-case scenario is a painful six-week recovery. The worst-case scenarios are unthinkable. I'm not usually a very emotional person, but the sudden shock of this news has really hit me. I tend to overanalyze everything and imagine multiple possible outcomes, which has been quite overwhelming.

Prayers are welcome.

Paris after dark (Weekend Street/Reflections #280)

 Paris, France

Wet streets, glowing lamps, and the quiet rhythm of bikes cutting through the night. Pure City of Light magic.

Would you hop on a bike and ride through Paris on a night like this?😜

Saxophone Colossus (Weekend Street/Reflections #279)

 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Several years ago in Philadelphia, I snapped this photo of a dapper street saxophonist holding court in his favorite spot, playing solo with quiet intensity. News of Sonny Rollins’s passing this week brought the image rushing back. Rollins didn’t just influence generations of sax players—he practically reinvented what the horn could do alone. By stepping away from the bandstand in the early 1960s to practice for hours on the Williamsburg Bridge, he turned unaccompanied solo saxophone into a profound art form: raw, meditative, and endlessly inventive. Maybe that’s why this Philadelphia player kept returning to the same patch of sidewalk year after year?

Le Flâneur nocturne (Weekend Reflections # 278)

Paris, France

Paris does not fully reveal itself to those who merely pass through. It offers itself more freely to those who wander without purpose, letting the rain decide the rhythm of their steps.

Strangers on a train (Weekend Reflections # 277)

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

“I got a theory a person ought to do everything it’s possible to do before he dies, and maybe die trying to do something that’s really impossible.” ― Patricia Highsmith (Strangers on a Train)

(Cradled by the reflection in the vitrine, the world glides, blurred and fragile; a double of oneself, an urban shadow, in the cold gleam of motionless glass.)

Proches, mais des mondes à part (Weekend Street/Reflections #275)

 Paris, France

Two scenes unfold mere feet apart, yet entirely separate. On one side, a lone man stands in quiet solitude, lost in his own thoughts. Just around the corner, a couple lingers at the warmly lit entrance of a Japanese ramen shop, trying to make an important decision.

Though their paths nearly cross, they remain unaware of each other’s existence. Each is absorbed in a private world. In the same physical space, parallel realities play out, one defined by solitude, the other by companionship.

In the end, the couple stepped inside the restaurant, the man turned and walked away into the night, and I remained the only witness to that brief, unspoken moment on the corner.

It’s May, a perfect time to revisit Chris Marker’s Le Joli Mai, a documentary that unfolds like a page from a nostalgic audio-visual diary of Paris.

Leading Light (Weekend Street/Reflections # 274)

London, England

One man. One briefcase. A thousand unanswered questions. Why was the light leading him to the mysterious doorway?

Earlier this week, I took a free Myers-Briggs personality test on 16personalities and was shocked by its accuracy. It all makes sense now!😀 Feel free to click the link above if you're interested in your personality type. The test takes about 10 or 15 minutes.

L’enseigne du barbier l’appelle? (Weekend Street/Reflections # 273)

 Lyon, France

They were on the outside looking in. What do you suppose they were looking at? I wondered when he would turn around, spot that barber pole lined up next to his full head of hair, and decide it was time for a haircut. Maybe I was just being catty because I don’t have nearly that much hair myself!😻

Pause-Selfie (Weekend Street/Reflections # 272)

 Lyon, France

It's hard to go very long without seeing someone stop and take a selfie.

Personally, I've never liked having my picture taken. The real irony? After more than 30 years online, I've never posted a single photo of myself—yet I've happily shared pictures of thousands of total strangers. 😕
